Kiosk meeting

We meet September 8 at 3:30 pm at the Deer Park Senior Center for the construction plan of the pilot project kiosk and review the map used in the brochure with the other two maps that the kiosk committee is considering for the kiosk pilot project. You are invited to attend this meeting.

The blogspot(in archives) includes the kiosk committee's definition of locations to be included in the pilot project kiosk map.

NEW HORIZON’S OPEN YOUTH Report and Newsletter

A club for the youth of Deer Park, sponsored by Deer Park 4-H and Deer Park Horizons.
The name has changed from Youth Livestock Club.

Following is a report of the meeting held September 2nd.

OLD BUSINESS:
We discussed the Petting Zoo event. It will be postponed until a location, permit and pets are organized. Katy & Kim will contact city hall for the permits needed. They are also talking to the owners of Deer Park Inland Feed/Cenex to see if they are interested in providing a location for the fund raising event. New Horizons Club will offer the event as a way to bring in new customers.
Notes from our first Aug 19th meeting: The first event for the youth club is a petting zoo. Deer Park will not allow livestock. We are attempting to get a permit to hold the event at Mix Park; The petting zoo charge is $1. Rides $2 and Pictures with the animals $2. Pictures can be taken with a digital camera and downloaded the pic on a CD. Times will be 10 – 2 and feature Kati’s horse, pony, paint, poultry, cows, rabbits, miniature horse of Shakara if possible and Spokanimal or Scraps pets.
We will publicize the event through the local papers, Town & Country Gazette, Deer Park Tribune, Spokesman & KHQ 6 Community TV Board; Radio spots.

NEW BUSINESS:

Gary lead the discussion on the ways we can build the Open Horizons Youth Club for the kids of Deer Park who are at risk from age 6th grade to 12th grades using the livestock and pets as a tool to teach, offer comfort.
We determined that we want to help kids at risk.
As we spoke, a lady sitting in a neighboring booth wished she had a place to go when her 16th year old needed counseling a few years ago. She had no help with the problems in her family. Janie took her name & contact info and will get her to become involved in some way.

Notes: a youth ranch at Medical Lake offers a place for those kids to keep their animals. The owner is an Ag teacher at Reardon school. Reardon has a great FFA program for their kids.

Deer Park kids are going to Spokane for drugs and support systems,
food, etc. Kids are also sleeping in the Chewelah Hospital halls because they have no place to go.
ALARMINGLY, Deer Park has approximately 61 homeless children .

How do we find them and gain trust, find ways to give them opportunities for the future to be productive adults and get trade/education skills?
Other contacts to help form the structure and resources are
Cross Walk in Spokane
Counselors at Churches in Spokane
Counselors in Spokane Mega Churches – New Life
Some of our group will contact Deer Park school board when we have a complete picture of the program in place for their support.
The kids we are trying to help may not want livestock, but may be in-tuned to K-9 Training, Companion Animals, Robotics or other interests.
We may begin by attracting the kids with New Horizon’s Open Youth Club "Overnight Packs": Toothpaste, Clean T-Shirt, clean wash-rag, towel, comb, items kids need for personal hygiene, etc. when traveling.
We may be trying to attract kids that are At Risk At Home, abusive parents, boyfriend, bully kids; or kids who just need to belong somewhere. A Safe Haven!
Now is the time to tap into Grants that will be available in the Spring & Summer of 2010. The funding sources will be stronger and more defined by that time for our uses.
We will need to be better trained in Grant Writing, writing RFP (Response For Proposal)
4-H Offers insurance that pays the huge deductibles if someone is hurt coming home or attending a meeting.
4-H offers many opportunities such as “Know Your Government” – KYG!
WHAT KIND OF CLUB DO WE WANT: Deer Park has 2 different K-9 Clubs. One is strict, very formal and the other helps all kinds of kids train their dogs – Sue and Marie are the leaders.
4-H Events: No expense for Dog Show competition, usually $1.
We may be interested in fund raising; offering opportunity for kids, stability and a safe haven.
BASIC 4-H follows Federal Regulations; The bi-laws are formed that follow the basic laws and then form their own agenda. Since our club has 2 ties to WSU (4-H & Horizons), we have a wealth of resources at our finger tips to make this club a huge success. We should utilize the WSU resources as much as possible.
4-H Goals is about people – the kids and the volunteers. 4-H Has levels:
Belonging is a Human Need, even gangs thrive by fulfilling that need.
Independence
Community Service
Mastery

ACTION PLAN:

What is the purpose of the Deer Park, New Horizon's "OPEN YOUTH" Club Target Children in Need
and offer a service.

Are we going to offer a place?
What is the principle: reach out to kids at risk, those not going to school, offer crisis centers, youth networks. Do we want to offer parenting classes, vocational counseling, drop off center like Vanessa Behan?
Formulate Draft Ideas:
Write a Mission Statement:
What 3 Things Do You want to do?
What do you stand for?
The progression of any community development begins now and what will it be in 6 months, 3, 5, 10 years from now.
Volunteers: Need to be fingerprinted, background checked if working with the kids. If someone gives a workshop and is not left alone with a kid, it is ok. Watch for preditors.
Form a 501C 3. Get a Probono Attorney.
Get support of the schools, churches to provide counseling, City Council, Chamber of Commerce and other organizations who may lend a hand on the project utilizing their expertise in certain areas.

As always, this blogsite welcomes your comments and questions.

It was discussed that The Horizons Youth Livestock Club's main focus will be to offer events so youth in the Deer Park Area can interact with animals at first hand. The purpose is to offer kids something else to think about instead of drugs, mischief and look forward to something fun kids all love... Animals. It will offer youth in the area events and leadership opportunity. This is a youth club and they are making the decisions with the support of other Horizons committee members. The club is working on their first event to be held Sat. Sept 5th 10 - 2 pm at Mix Park in Deer Park. Katy is checking on permits. Katy will bring her horses and Kim her poultry; another friend may bring rabbits.I am checking with Spokanimal concerning some pets for the event. This will be a fund raiser asking participants to donate $1. to pet the animals. I have attached the Horizons Logo for the flyer Katy will make & hand out at the Clayton Fair this weekend. If all works out, the Horizons Youth Livestock Club will try to get the petting zoo event at the Spokane County Fair sometime following the opening on Sept 11th. We discussed contacting KHQ 6 Community Board to let the community know about the petting zoo and the Horizons Youth Livestock Club.

DEER PARK HORIZONS VISIONING EVENT

Deer Park Horizons Group attended the Visioning Event while while tasting the scrumptious desserts provided to all who wanted them.
Krisan Lehew, the Horizons Coach, offered introductions and an overview of the program.

There were reports from the Brochure Committee and the Kiosk Committee.

The results of the survey were reviewed and we talked about the youth input and the children's posters. We broke into small groups where questions and answers were discussed about the top ten categories. Then we reported back about what was discussed in the groups. Then we voted with dots placed under each catagory. This resulted in the top two priorities for Deer Park, which were:

Support letters for WSU Extension Horizon's

WSU Extension Horizons program staff have written a Compassion Capital Fund Demonstration Program grant to continue and expanded our work with Horizons Alumni Communities and the current Horizons (H3) communities. The grant is for 12 months, $500,000 total, with at least $200,000 of the grant being available for Alumni Horizons communities to apply for as sub-grants, back to the communities. We have built in additional training dollars, finances and incentives for Alumni communities to serve as "mentors" to new Horizons communities, limited Coaching time, in addition to the sub-grants. This Federally funded grant encourages us to acquire support letters from community members, organizations and partners.
Attached is a sample letter. If you feel comfortable in writing a support letter, please return it to Doreen Hauser-Lindstrom, WSU - Spokane, South Facility, PO Box 1495, Spokane, WA 99210, or fax 509.358.7549 or scan todoreen@wsu.edu by Friday, June 19th.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank-you for your support.

Deer Park Horizon’s June Progress

While around 20 area residents are finalizing three projects outlined in December 2008 as one way to reduce poverty in the Deer Park area, the most immediate deadline in Mid July has created an urgent need to request the assistance of the Deer Park Community. We need to receive and review 400-500 surveys from Deer Park residents and surrounding areas. We have been distributing the surveys and receive minimal returns. So we are getting out the big guns! We’ve gotten 41 posters from the Chattaroy Elementary students in a Poster Contest and with an Essay contest we received 58 surveys from Deer Park High School students. Several individuals have been getting surveys filled out in their stores, churches, exercise class and other meeting places that the Horizons committee are involved in within Deer Park. So now we hope to receive the remaining necessary surveys by Friday, July 3rd. The Deer Park Tribune will deliver the surveys on June 24th and 3 winners will receive prizes from a random drawing from surveys received by Friday, July 3rd. You may mail or drop off your survey to Melo’s Flowers or the Chamber of Commerce. Details are on the surveys. The survey results will then give committee members the next direction for the Horizon’s project – Visioning. To date, the Deer Park’s Northwest Foundation Horizons project progress includes finalizing three current project and 25 residents have competed the Leadership Plenty 12 week training. To see the progress, go to the blog: http://deerpark-wa.blogspot.com.

The three current projects that were determined during the December 2009 action forum include:

Youth projects, Kelly Archer 276-1612
Koisk, Christine Clark 276-2006
Resource Brochures, Debbie Cogan 276-9462

The projects are complex and committee driven with many changes throughout the past months. In addition to working on the three projects, 20 area residents participated in the Horizons Leadership Plenty seminars. We met every Monday at the Deer Park city hall and Senior Center meeting rooms for 12 weeks to complete the Horizons curriculum. The main goal of the Northwest Foundation’s Horizons Deer Park group is to create a forum of discussions within the community to find realistic solutions to eliminate poverty. The discussion of “poverty” also follows.

LEADERSHIP PLENTY MEETINGS FINISHED

LeadershipPlenty meetings came to an end at Deer Park Horizons, but the Community Visioning Process part of the Horizons program is yet to come!

What is the Community Visioning Process? Well... it is the many ideas and skills generated during Study Circles and LeadershipPlenty. During this phase the broader community is mobilized to adopt a shared vision and a plan for poverty reduction for Deer Park and surrounding areas. One of the ways will be through a "Make Deer Park a Better Place to Live" survey. The survey prepared as a visioning tool, will help glean knowledge from at least 15% ( hopefully more), of the total community. The Deer Park Horizons group will be encouraging participants from all segments of the community to participate in the survey.

More information about the results of the survey, updates on the committees progress and other community information to come on this blog later.

Finding new people and connecting them with local resources, such as the local resource guide the group is preparing. Also, directing them to another local resource like the groups Kiosk that is presently under construction. ( Two Horizon's group action projects resulting from study circles).
The need of youth involvement and positive interaction with adults in the community.
More youth activities that appeal to the youth.

Kiosk Committee Report

As of March 24, the Horizons III Deer Park Community kiosk committee met at the Deer Park Senior Center.
The next meeting is April 7 at 1 pm at the Deer Park Senior Center. Present were Carolyn Thorpe, Jeff Tomlinson, Betty Burdette, Deanna Henry, Susan Jameson, and Christine Clark.

Today's meeting included discussion of accessible essential information about the Deer Park Community including
a map with markers for essential services with a key legend.
An organization or a specific person is required to maintain the kiosk information.
Policies for posting of information need to be specific and provide for free speech.
Indoor kiosk bulletin boards proposed might be at the lobby of City Hall and possibly indoors at Yoke's.
An outdoor kiosk site discussion resulted in planning for several kiosks in the "H" Street area, the Chevron area,
the Mix Park area, and at the South East corner of the Airport at Deer Park-Milan Road east of Cedar Rd,
but starting with a pilot project.
The pilot project might be the US Hwy 395 intersection with "H" Street.
Ace Hardware and Rosauers have been contacted about the proposal with replies expected by Thursday afternoon.
Committee consensus: the structure could be either treated wood or treated steel. A three-sided structure could be triangular or three panels in a line. It must be visually attractive, protected with a roof, with lighting from dusk to dawn. One section would have permanent information such as the map and frequently-used community services protected either by a locked kiosk cabinet or with a permanent fastened covering. One section would be for public access information. It could have sliding polycarbonate panels such as the one at Miller's One Stop on Hwy 2. The other section would provide information from the information resource committee.
Susan will contact Tonka Timber again. Carolyn suggested contacting NW Fabrication. Betty will find out the name of the metal worker who created the archway for Woodland Cemetery.
Jeff Tomlinson will contact two architects for volunteer design services and will meet with Chewelah's Planning Commission Chair, Tom Bristol. Chris will email Jeff the name of the Arts Center architect.
Deanna Henry will contact a Scout Leader for a possible Eagle Scout needing a project.
Chris Clark will contact Kelly Archer of the Horizons Deer Park Youth committee to request suggestions from Deer Park School District's Special Projects Director Trip Goodall. Chris Clark will ask the City what is required for the pilot project outdoor kiosk. She will contact Scott Moore about the proposed indoor kiosk.
Carolyn will investigate kiosks in communities as she travels in the next two weeks.
Betty Burdette, a committee resource guide, will be available by telephone for further information. She will reserve the Senior Center for April 7 kiosk committee meeting.
Revisions of the meeting report gladly received,
Christine Clark

The activities in Module One included personal reflection, self assessment, team building, goal setting and action planning. The group branched off into two teams to build an "Action Sandwich". Both teams built their sandwich with the same eight Ingredients. The following are the important issues that they discussed and chose from cards to compose their ingredients.

HOPE:
That we all be part of the Deer Park Community and surrounding area.
That every family in the Deer Park area can afford a nice home and food to eat.

FEAR:
Lack of community connecting with one another.
The economy will continue to worsen and families and kids will continue to suffer.

PASSION:
That we all come together to create a better place for the community by learning and understanding the needs of the people with in it.
"We are so moved about good things that young people are doing for the community".

ROLE:
Encourage the younger generation to help out more in the community by volunteering.
Mentoring young people to think outside the box.

TIME:
Work together one step at a time, there is no time limit when we are trying to help others.
It depends on how much effort we put into our goals, we usually get out of it what we put into it.
MONEY:
Donations, grants, loans and any source that is willing to help us in this tight economy are needed.
Contact organizations for ideas, research and raise money to help meet our goals.

FACT:
Time, money, help and support are limited but if we keep trying, we as a community Can Do Anything!
It takes a town to raise a child and what ever we choose to do we have to nurture.
REALITY:
It takes a group, leadership, and commitment to start and finish community goals.
We need to get to know our neighbors and help them with their needs.
