DPiP Community Garden Update

The DPiP Community Garden project was postponed due to lack of community interest and needing a Garden location. The DPiP Board of Directors voted to look to it as a future project.
We will post updates on the blog.

HOW WE CAME TO BE! Deer Park in Progress (DPiP) Nonprofit

Deer Park in Progress started because of Horizons.

HORIZONS IS ABOUT MOVEMENT AND CHANGE: From waiting to leading...from talk to action...from poverty to prosperity...from a few to many...from despair to hope...from indifference to pride. The Horizons program is about the changes a community can make to move from poverty to hope, from population and economic decline to prosperity. This initiative is for rural communities of fewer than 5,000 and with poverty rates of at least 10 percent.
Open to all community members, Horizons focuses on practical strategies and tools. More specifically, it provides locally-delivered training, skill-building, and coaching to strengthen community leadership and civic engagement systems. Experience has shown that small communities can thrive if they have a strong leadership system.
Forty Washington communities including Deer Park have participated in Horizons since 2004. Nearly 300 communities have participated overall in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
Washington State University Extension is proud to be one of seven delivery organizations of Horizons, and eight-state initiative of the Northwest Area Foundation.

Now, Deer Park In Progress Nonprofit Organization, not just renamed, but an organization that has formed a board of directors, incorporation and has achieved a 501(c)(3)tax status. Also a 10,000 grant from Horizon's for completing the 18 month program.

The organization is founded on much of the same mission and principals as Horizons. It has added some of its own touch to encompass and reflect the needs of our specific community of Deer Park and surrounding area. We aim to partner with other community organizations to work towards the mission which is always ongoing.

Deer Park in Progress (DPiP) Mission Statement:

"Exploring and finding solutions to reduce poverty in Deer Park and the surrounding area with help and involvement of the community, so all may thrive."

The blog website is an information source, where information is posted and comments and questions welcome and answered as soon as possible.

All board and members are community volunteers and anyone from the community with a passion and belief in the DPiP mission are encouraged to come to the meetings with their ideas, input and info.

DEER PARK COMMUNITY RESOURCE GUIDE

The Deer Park community has requested a brochure; a way to get details available about the community concerning local services, lists of information for Deer Park churches, schools and vital locations needed such as the Deer Park Post Office, City Hall, Senior Center, Greenhouse Food Bank, and other local services and resources.
Last year the Deer Park Horizons group identified poverty as being not just a lack of finances but also resources. They formed a committee to produce this brochure, accompanied with a map to locate the services.
The committee did not want it to be a commercial retail project, but a community project compiling the services and resources that the Deer Park Community and surrounding areas have to offer.
It has taken a long time to complete the brochure because the leg work and design work which included many, many donated hours by a dwindling committee. The project received a very welcome and much appreciated donation from Deer Park Rotary to pay for the printing. The printing of 2000 brochures on glossy stock tri-fold paper for each brochure has taken place.
They will be distributed in Deer Park at various places including the Deer Park Chamber, Deer Park Library and city hall.
Deer Park in Progress Nonprofit (DPiP)
(Formerly, Deer Park Horizons 3) is very happy to share this information with the Deer Park Community and surrounding area.
