Grant Boot Camp Ritzville

Horizons Teams:

It is important that each community recruit a TEAM of 3-4 people to attend together and share this experience. History shows that it’s hard to process all this information and then share it in your community. So try your very best and work with your coach and Leadership Team to identify and recruit a solid team. And, you MUST stay the entire time.

Horizons Projects:

Each ‘team’ will be allowed to submit 1 project idea for the entire group’s consideration. Working groups will be formed to write a grant proposal of the selected project ideas. Your submission should be typed and copied (50 copies please) on one sided paper and it should include a summary description of the project need and idea, your potential partners, the approximate cost and any possible funding sources.

Presentation letter City Approval of Kiosk

This is the letter which will be provided to the Mayor, the City Council, and the City Staff along with copies of the construction drawings and information about the Horizons Project to prepare for the Pilot Project Information Kiosk ten (10) minute request for approval by the City on October 21, Wednesday at 7 pm.

Dear Mayor Whisman,

Please consider the Request for Approval by the City of Deer Park, Washington, of the gift of
the Pilot Project Information Kiosk at the Community Arts Center, 315 E. Crawford, designed and constructed by an Eagle Scout Candidate Seth Nelson, Project Manager and Horizons III Deer Park Area Community Project Kiosk Committee with community contributions.
To be approved: Site, City Donation of Land, Foundation, Sidewalk for the pilot project Kiosk constructed with community partners including local organizations, businesses, and resident volunteers.
In September 2008 Deer Park community volunteers agreed to work with the Horizons Project managed by Washington State University: Extension as part of a grant program to fund activities to promote prosperity and decrease poverty in small communities in partnership with the Northwest Area Foundation founded by the Great Northern Railroad. Two Study Circles were completed with a December meeting resulting in 4 goals: providing the good news about Deer Park to residents and visitors, tangible kiosks for the information, promotion of positive opportunities for children and youth, and provision of a local sustainable food supply. Committees were formed to achieve the goals.
From January to May, concurrent committee work along with a Leadership-A-Plenty skills seminar resulted in organized action. An August Community meeting for Visioning reviewed community goals obtained from a survey. The committee reports were consolidated into an Action Report as part of an August grant application to the Northwest Area Foundation with the assistance of WSU-Extension Horizons III Project.
This summer, Seth Nelson, Eagle Scout candidate (Boy Scout Troupe 28 proposed a plan for an outdoor log kiosk which portrays the logging history of Deer Park. Other information kiosks will follow.
Attached are copies of organizational materials and construction drawings.
The Kiosk Committee hope for your approval of this request which includes partnering with the Deer Park Horizons III Steering committee, the Community Resource Committee, Krisan LeHew, the WSU-Extension Horizons Community Coach, Boy Scout Troop 28, City of Deer Park, Deer Park Development Association, Deer Park Chamber of Commerce, Deer Park Senior Center, Washington Trust Bank, Evergreen Truss, Custom Log Furniture, Bear Country Carving, Northwest Canopies, Rasmussen Log Products, Floyd’s Welding, Ace Hardware, Rosauer’s Supermarkets, Yoke’s Fresh Markets, and Finafrock Excavating,Inc.

We thank the Horizons Project volunteers and the staff of the City of Deer Park, especially Community Development Director Roger Krieger, and Streets and Roads Director Brian Ramsden for their willingness to meet with the committee and provide technical assistance.
Some of our valuable volunteers have stepped aside as health and family needs require more personal time. Their contributions have been essential. We miss them.

THE FUTURES GAME COMMING SOON!

A Tool to Engage Community Members in Debating Their Collective Future.

This practical "hands-on tool allows participants to tackle the challenges of community and economic development in a fun and engaging manner. The game is played in small teams, in which participants jointly make a series of critical decisions that are likely to shape the future of their region over a 20-year period. The game takes a multi-faceted and integrated view of the future, allowing people to explore a range of plausible regional outcomes and assess their implications and consequences. This "futures simulation"  approach adds extra depth and strength to local and regional planning efforts and helps hone leadership and decision making skills.
